More and More

Okay, so here are some more comics furthering the story.

Okay, so for the one above (it was rushed, as this was in the middle of the semester I believe) I had to basically get Jen and Nick to meet other than "Oh they just knew each other". That doesnt always go for good serial comics unless they're married or whatnot, and it was something I didnt want to do. I wanted to have the serial see them meet. Of course, the fuzzes needed to be more for Nick than Jen, so all of this will play up. Please forgive the next few after this. These were rushed as well, and I was still trying to find my feet with Illustrator and their own style. (Yes anime, but I needed to have their own style as a comic. Something that was relatively easy to look at and understand.)

As for this one, you can see I got a little more anime with it. Woot.

Ha. Now for this one I modeled it after a few professors I had had, and it was also supposed to be kind of representative of all the weird and wacky professors that everyone has probably had when they were in college or even in high school. No joke, I had some professors like this.

Same same. Ever had a supposedly easy class that threw a ginormous truckload full of tests and papers at you? Ha. Yes.

More Comics

Okay, so here are the next three comics in the series.

These basically introduced the other protagonist, Jen. Together Nick and Jen were going to find out what exactly these little guys were.

Comic 2

Okay, so for the next comic I wanted to start setting up the mystery that was going to be through out the series. That was the main question: What are they?

There will be a few hints, but no answer until the end of the comic.

The other mystery I wanted to set up was why they kept "spelling" or saying guacomole wrong. That is also part of the mystery. The questions themselves were basically questions everyone kept asking me when they saw the fuzzes. Were they chicken nuggets, furbies, etc? Sooooo I decided to put that in. So here you go:

Genesis of the Fuzz

Okay, so its been a little while, but it's back.

The first comic I did (after creating the story line, in entirety, I pitched toe comic to the then editor of the Vermillion, Jennifer. She liked it and I started with my first comic. Now, to those who don't do comics for syndication or publishing, you usually have limitations to work with in a newspaper or magazine. My limitations were 10x4, roughly. However, limitations can be good tools for learning to think creatively.

Anyway, I began basically by introducing the protagonist Nick (Nicholas, as called by his mother, which you'll see later), who is having a bad day. I wanted to set this guy up as having more than just a comic appearance. I hoped to add a little depth by telling you about his life by the first sentance. I also wanted to show that he's just a regular guy. (this was actually the second comic, the first basically had the two fuzzes with their random spanish). Woot!

The thing about tripping came from UL, because every student there has tripped at least ONCE. It's a requirement. Falling is preferred, but doesnt usually happen. (I did see a girl whipe out on a bicycle before.)

Anyway, it was just a way to start the story.

Random Fuzz Under the Couch

Okay, so I eventually want to make this a blog about the current comic strip I have in the Vermillion called "Random Fuzz". It will feature comics, sketches, and general ideas for already published comics, as well as general production notes.

So, let's start at the very beginning.

It's a very good place to start.

Random fuzz happened, well, randomly. I was in a design 1 classroom, bored during class. I had made my 50-something sketches of a design and was waiting for the teach to come around and look at it. I had a big sketch pad in front of me and started just doodling. Out came the little fuzzy creatures that are in the comic today. The girl across from me thought they were cute and said "Put a sombrero on them!" or something like that. So I put a sombrero and maraccas on it. Voila! Instant cute weird little fuzzy things. I then put the phrase "Donde estan mis pantalones?" which translates to "Where are my pants?" then i drew another one that said "guacamole!" So, the girl laughed and I think some other people around the table did too. So I started drawing it on the black board and random boards around the studio for fun.

Then comes design 2. by this time I had just drawn them and didnt think much of it. I had no plans, no ideas for anything related to a series. So, needless to say, I was just drawing them in weird places in the studio room. I started putting them in turkey outfits, santa outfits, random weird stuff and making jokes on the chalkboard with them. The teacher would say "I'm waiting for the joke, man!" referring to the fuzzy little things I drew. Ha. So i started drawing them every class.

I finally made a huge picture and put it up on the wall towards the end of the semester. It got 'stolen' later by a friend who put it on her myspace because she thought it was funny.

So, here comes another semester or so later (probably two or three?)

I start getting an idea to do a comic series of these little guys, and it just happened that it was around that time that my friend put the picture on myspace. So, i talked to one of my friends who was the media director of the school newspaper. I made some sketches and worked on a storyline for the entire series.

Once I made the storyline or rather got ideas for it from beginning to end, I presented it to the editor and got the job as a cartoonist for the Vermillion (and photographer as well, which was a very cool bonus!)

So that's how it started. I'll blog more on ideas for the first semester of the comic, and where all of that came from, as well as production notes for them.

Until then, Vaya con Dios!
